The BMI or Body Mass Index is the estimated measure of a person’s body fat. Computation of the BMI is based on the weight and height. It is considered that you have a normal amount of body fat if your BMI is between the range of 19 and 25. The person is overweight if his BMI is 25 to 29.9; and obese if he has a BMI of 30 and higher. Higher BMI means higher possibility of getting diseases like heart disease, arthritis, diabetes and cancers.

A typical BMI calculator needs a weight and height measurement from a measuring tape and a scale. The result from the calculated BMI will help you assess the risks of disease that you might have; this is also a dependable indicator of body fat you have.

In getting the BMI, the first step is to have a scale, measure your body weight and record. Put the scale in a level surface and a hard place. Have your weight recorded on morning to avoid rise and fall of your weight because of the meals and hydration. Next step is to use a physician’s scale, stadiometer or measuring tape and held it on the wall to measure and have a record of your height.

After that, input your weight in any BMI calculator (standard); this is available in the internet and sometimes in mobile phones. BMI calculator will need the weight to be either in pounds or kilograms. Convert the measurement if necessary. Be sure to have the measurements entered in right unit. That step will be followed by entering your height which is usually required to be in cm or inches. If you don’t have such unit of measurements, it’s the time you convert it. Multiply the inches to 2.54 if you wish to convert inches to centimeters. Again, be sure to input correct unit of measurement. After the inputs, it’s time to compute for your BMI. On the other hand, the BMI can be calculated manually. Multiply the height which is in pounds to 730, and then divide by your height in square inches. The result is your BMI. Look for table which has the corresponding results to your BMI. The scores range from fifteen to forty.

Upon looking on the table, you will now be able to interpret the results. BMI values between 18.5 and 24.9 are normal. Other values within this range have fewer risks of diseases; it is also an ideal BMI result.
